secrets to better email writing...

Hey, Reader!

I've been subscribing to a ton of newsletters lately.

Some for research, some for learning, some for shopping. I've been purposefully studying them and noticing the ones I open every single time, the ones I delete without reading, and the ones I skim and then promptly forget about. I've now got 3834 sitting in my inbox!

It turns out the difference between them has almost nothing to do with design, frequency, or how big the list is. It comes down to three very small things that anyone can do, starting with the next email they send. (Hint: you are sending emails, right?)

Here they are:

3 easy email tips to try this week

1. Write the subject line last

Most people write the subject line first, before they know what the email actually says. Write the email, then go back and write the subject line once you know what you truly want them to open it for. It will be more specific, more honest, and far more likely to get opened. Then, don't forget to test it out at subjectline.com

2. End with a question, not a call to action

Instead of "click here" or "book a call," end your email with one simple question. Something you genuinely want to know the answer to. "What's the one thing you're stuck on right now?" or "Which of these resonates most with you?" Questions invite conversation. Conversation builds trust. Trust builds buyers.

3. Read it out loud before you send

If it sounds stiff or unnatural coming out of your mouth, rewrite it. Your emails should sound like you talking, not like a press release and definitely not like a robot. If you wouldn't say it to a friend over coffee, don't put it in an email. This one tip will transform how your writing feels and how your readers respond to it.

Bonus tip: Always send yourself a test email and read it on your phone. You'll see how it looks on mobile and make sure to test for broken links!

There you have it, friend.

Good emails don't have to be long. They don't have to be perfect. They just have to feel like they came from a real person, to a real person, about something that actually matters. That's it. That's the whole secret.

Have a wonderful week.
